Google Video shutting down

Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we’re removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide. On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We’ve added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don’t want to download your content, you don’t need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.) We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven’t done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options includi ng the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here. Here’s how to download your videos: Go to the Video Status page. To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column. Once a video has been downloaded, “Already Downloaded” will appear next to the Download Video link. If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all. Please note: This download option will be available through May 13, 2011. Thank you for being a Google Video user. Sincerely, The Google Video Team © 2011 Google | 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043

Friday Night at the Bowling Alley Guest

Friday Night at the Bowling Alley

Guest written by our friend Sergio Chaney

I have been in a Friday night bowling league for five consecutive years. The 14-team league competes at a small bowling alley in southeastern Michigan from September-May. The first game starts at 8 p.m. and the final game usually ends around 11 p.m. on typical nights.

That start time has remained the same for all five years of my league membership. This particular league is strictly for men and there are a total of four on each team. Luckily nobody from my team has quit and we have stayed together for all five years. The name of our team is Joe's Cafe, which is a small bar and grill nearby.

Joe's Cafe is our sponsor and donates money to pay for our team shirts. My team finished in last place during our first two years of league competition. Our bowling skills were a bit rusty and none of us finished with an average above 140. Since then all of our bowling skills have improved tremendously. Last year we won the league's first place trophy and currently sit in first place again this year.

All four of us live near each other, so we rotate driving duties on a weekly basis. Whether I am driving or being picked up, my home security system (adt home security North Carolina systems) is always set before leaving the house.

Top Wordpress Plugins for an SEO Friendly Blog

Using Wp-o-Matic for autoblogging is a great way to automate your blogs but there can certainly be issues that you want to protect your blog from. The biggest problem with autoblogs has got to be the duplicate content issues and of course the slew of comments and trackbacks you will receive from other autobloggers but thankfully there are tools for keeping your blog clean and SEO friendly.

SEOPress for Meta Tags

SEO Press Screenshot 1
SEO Press Screenshot 2
SEO Press is a truly powerful and impressive Wordpress Plugin with so many features it could easily use it's own blog post but we'll be keeping these reviews short and too the point. SEOPress is without doubt my favorite SEO Wordpress Plugin because it basically automates many of the features necessary for proper meta tag management. Set everything from the length of your meta tags to the content included in keywords and description tags and make your blog a SEO traffic machine with integrate meta tags management.

Delete Duplicate Posts

Using Wp-O-Matic to syndicate posts can create a problem with duplicate blog posts and we all know how bad that can be for Google. Getting stuck in the supplemental results on Google because you have duplicated content can kill you SEO results. The Wordpress Plugin Delete Duplicate Posts makes it very easy to manage duplicate content and it actually does so automatically by searching blog post titles and deleting any duplicates it finds. This of course only works if you import posts with the same title and the content is not important.

Please Link 2 Me

The "Please Link 2 Me" plugin adds a text box containing all the HTML code necessary for your website visitors to easily create links back to your article from their website with this easy to use text embed. If you want more links to your blog or website you need this Wordpress Plugin.

WordPress Link Directory

WordPress Link Directory is a simple, compact and quick-setup link directory plugin for WordPress which allows other webmasters to add their site to your website and manage a reciprocal link exchange for link boosting.

NoFollow WP for keeping Spammy Comments

Of course comments can be an issue when you allow others topost content to your website. Spammers will promote their spammy pages by sharing links in your comments but the DoFollow WP Wordpress Plugin makes it easier to control things by giving you total control over what outbound links have the NoFollow or the DoFollow tags. Making your comments links NoFollow should dissuade the commenter from hammering your blog with spammy comments. It also allows you to go ahead and let the comments flow on your blog with no worry about penalties from Google for linking to spam websites. This to me is the easiest and best solution.

Google XML Sitemaps

The Google XML Sitemaps plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your blog. With such a sitemap, it's much easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve it more efficiently.

Robots Meta

The Robots Meta plugin makes it easy to add the appropriate meta robots tags to your pages, disable unused archives, nofollow unnecessary links as well as do some other robots tools management. Proper robots indexing will increase the crawling activity from search engines and boost the readability of your website.

AddToAny: Share/Bookmark/Email Button

The AddToAny WordPress plugin to help people socialize their blogs and share, bookmark, and email your posts and pages using any social media service, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, Digg, Delicious, and well over 100 more sharing and social bookmarking sites. If you want to tap in to millions of social network users you need to offer a way for your readers to share your content on them.

There are literally 1000's of Wordpress Plugins to help with managing your blog but these are my faves for running an SEO friendly blog and keeping the content clean. If you want to promite your blog you will need to look at these plugins or at least something similar in effect to them.

Using Wordpress Plugins to deal with Comment Spam

I suppose the biggest issue most face with blogs has to be the comments but there are ways to deal with them. I personally embrace all comments on my blogs. I have come to realize that Google likes comments on your blog and they usually rank pages based on how many people are using that page as a resource. If you have pages on your site that seem to get more comments you may also notice that these pages will also have lots of traffic being sent to them.

Basically it seems Google wants to give their users the best experience possible by sending them to a page that users actually enjoy. If your page has been shared on social networks like Facebook or Twiiter than the more references it has the more popular it will become.

Delete Pending Comments

The Wordpress Plugin Delete Pending Comments offers a quick and simple way to deal with an overload of pending spam comments. By default you can only manage 20 pending comments per page. Well with 100's or even 1000's of spam comments to manage you need a lot of time to delete them all. With this plugin you can easily delete all Pending Comments at one time.

Facebook Comments for Wordpress

This Wordpress Plugin integrates the Facebook commenting system right into your website. If a reader is logged into Facebook while viewing any comment-enabled page or post, they'll be able to leave a comment using their Facebook profile. Non-Facebook users can post anonymously with a valid email address and still comment on your blog without need for Facebook.

Using Disqus for Wordpress Comments

Disqus, pronounced "discuss", is a service and tool for web comments and discussions that makes it pretty hard to spam users. Disqus makes commenting easier and more interactive, while connecting websites and commenters across a thriving discussion community and allows a user to comment on any number of sites using the same account.

There are a number of ways to deal with comment spam on Wordpress including shutting off comments altogether but you will miss out on the added social benefits of allowing your readers to interact with your blog or website and also hurt your frankings on major search engines like Google and Yahoo.

With the right set of Wordpress plugins you can run a spam free blog and still keep your users engaged and sharing your valuable website content.

Wordpress Autoblogging Tips: How to build an auto blog with Wp-O-Matic

Wordpress is a powerful blog platform for individuals who want to write on any subject. It can also be used by webmasters who want to build auto blogs, or automatic blogs for autoblogging, that post on a regular schedule using content available online. Autoblogs, or splogs, have been called a scourge or bloodsuckers for scraping and stealing content from legitimate publishers who take the time to create fresh unique content. For years now black hat webmasters have been scraping and scrambling content from top ranked websites and churning our useless text to feed the search engines insatiable appetite for the latest and greatest.

Things are a bit different now. Syndicated content is a legitimate website business model and publishers have established that proper attribution of the original source is a value to both the syndicater and also the source which gains a valuable inbound link for every syndicated post. Giant content farms like AssociatedContent.com or any of the many article directories warehouse tons of free website content that webmasters can use to mix in with original content to create a larger more useful resource for readers.

Using Wordpress, a webmaster can build a blog that syndicates news on any keyword topic from a huge range of sources. With a few simple and free Wordpress plugins you can build an automatic blog to syndicate relevant content and automagically update your website. Pure autoblogs are limited in how much traffic they will draw using only duplicate content and you'll have to really mix things up with articles from many sources in order to gain any respect with Google. Of course all content needs links so having some inbound links to your syndicated content is key to real performance but if you want a quick and esy way to setup a free auto blog you have to check out Wp-O-Matic.

Using the Wp-O-Matic Wordpress Plugin to AutoBlog

Our first and most important plugin is Wp-O-Matic which "makes autoblogging a snap by automatically creating posts from the RSS/Atom feeds you choose, which are organized into campaigns" and can be installed from your plugins administration panel.

Wp-O-Matic Setup Step One - Create and Add Campaign

Your campaign title can be used as a keyword variable in the content of the posting template so pick your title to reflect a targeted keyword phrase such as Hollywood California Apartments which I am using for an apartment related domain I have. These template variables are important to building a unique and seo ready blog post so choose your text wisely.

Wp-O-Matic Setup Step Two - Add RSS Feeds for Syndication

The second step requires a bit of pre-planning. You'll need some available RSS feeds that you can most likely find in a good RSS Directory. Test and then use these feeds to import content to your blog. You can import any blog you want and risk the owner complaining or you can do a little research and see if they have a specific copyright notice on their website which will usually be included in the site footer. Understand we will only be using a portion of the syndicated article and we will be referring the reader to the full article at the original source should they be interested in knowing more.

Wp-O-Matic Setup Step Three - Select Wordpress Categories for Syndicated Articles

As you can see I have a Wordpress Category made to match my targeted keyword. You can chose to do the same or you can integrate the posts into your existing categories for established blogs or even better you can create a new category for syndicated posts and manage them all with the built in Wordpress category features or even a separate Category plugin.

Wp-O-Matic Setup Step Four - Rewrite Content With Regular Expression

Wp-O-Matic is a powerful tool with a built in Regex  engine for searching and replacing selected text including keywords, urls, affiliate id numbers and even Google Publisher codes for more complete personalization. Use this tool to create truly unique articles for syndication and better search engine indexing by replacing identifying code in the source article but please abide by copyright restrictions and leave source referrals in place.

Wp-O-Matic Setup Step Five - Template Setup and First Import of Wp-O-Matic Content

Wp-O-Matic offers a posting template with variables that can be used to create very unique and professional looking article imports. Using the {campaigntitle} from the first step we can mix the targeted keyword phrase Hollywood California Apartments into the blog post along with the syndicated content, blog title and source feed url. Using the available template variables you can build any number of unique article formats.

After setting up your template you can complete other settings such as desired post frequency or feed date based based on how you want the posts to show up in your blog.

The final steps in the setup listed below will allow you to chose how many blog posts to create on each run and who the author for each post should be. Each campaign can only have one Author so you can create an account for each syndicated source if you wish or you can just assign them all to the Admin account. "Post links to source" will set the Wordpress blog title Permanent link to the source url which is the best way to stay clear of the Google Duplcate Content Filters because you don't have any internal pages of content and only refer each blog title to the original source. Of course doing this creates a 100% bounce back ratio on all visitors and you never get to keep any of your traffic so most people instead create a link to an internal page by unchecking this box. Discussion options determines if you want to have comments open or not and trackbacks of course help secure more inbound links so use as you wish on those.

Wp-O-Matic Setup - Content Tools and Post Management

Wp-O-Matic offers you the option to Remove All blog posts by Campaign so you can use a campaign for each content source. This way if someone complains about you syndicating their content you can easily remove it all with one click on the mouse. Even if you have permission to syndicate an article people change their mind and if you had to manually remove 100's of blog posts it would be a real hassle. Leave yourself a way to fix any mistakes by breaking up your syndicated content by source so its easier to remove if necessary.

Use these other Wordpress Plugins to Customize your AutoBlog

Wp-O-Matic alone is an awesome tool but for autoblogging but for best results you'll want to use a few other plugins to make your autoblog perfect. Look for reviews on Simple Tags for autotagging blog content and Delete Duplicate Posts in the next two posts for running a clean seo friendly autoblog.

Local search engine marketing services online

Search engine marketing is an ever evolving industry and the latest trends are towards local search engine marketing which targets a geographical niche for marketers of small business and services in a particular region.

Local search engine marketing is very important for a majority of small business owners who seek to maximize the return on their investment by targeting clients who love nearby and may actually be able to access their locally available products or services. An example of local search engine marketing would be in developing an internet marketing proposal for a local real estate agent who has property listings in a select city such as Orlando Florida.

Targeting generic keywords such as real estate or homes for sale will most likely generate a lot of useless traffic for a website geared towards sales of homes in the Orlando Florida area. With local search engine marketing services, such as those offered at www.local-marketing.com, a marketing agent will target more geo specific keywords such as orlando real estate or orlando homes for sale which will drive fewer but more highly targeted visitors to the site. These directly related keywords will convert to greater sales or leads and offer a superior ROI over more generic forms of internet marketing.

Best places to buy domain names

I bought my first domain back in 1999 and I have been continually buying and selling them since about 2003 when I finally realized how lucrative they could be. Had I seen the light a few years earlier it might have been a different story, I may have been able to snag some of those million dollar domains but I still managed to do well enough.

I have been buying dropped domains for more than 5 years now but that market has seen a steady increase in the competition for dropped names and things are more active now on the auction market where great domains can still be had at cheap prices. I monitor dropped domains using a custom application but I do buy domains from other sources online including some of the large webmaster communities online and the domain auction websites and newsletters. I receive the weekly dropped domains list from Justdropped.com which has some great deals on premium domains for sale. I monitor the forums at namepros.com and forums.digitalpoint.com for deals but those are harder to come by in those competitive markets.

I have had decent luck monitoring tdnam.com for discount domain auctions with quite a few names, and keyword domains coming up for sale. I have had the best luck there picking up single word ccTLD domains like .ws or .mobi domains that have been dropped recently but sold in the domain aftermarket by GoDaddy. You have to watch theses auction sites for days on end before you will find some true gems but there is lots of value and great domains for sale right now.

Maintain your Drupal CMS installations

I've been working with Drupal CMS for the past couple of months now and I am continued to be impressed with how robust a software application the open source cms is and the scale of website you can develop using this on a variety of projects. The Drupal community offers lots of modules and customizations which can do all sorts of great things and I have had nothing but positive results. I installed a mixed bag of Drupal modules and themes on the half dozen sites I manage now and one glaring difference has cropped up over other open source CMS such as Wordpress or Simple Machines in how much time and effort you must put into site maintenance.

Wordpress really is a dream CMS if you want to build a blog or company driven website because it focuses on the individual where Drupal is built to support and develop a larger community and Wordpress is simply more user friendly from an admin point of view. Wordpress allows for installation of plugins and update of core features from within the user interface. I can install and configure a plugin without ever having to upload files or set permissions which is a real issue on Drupal. With my Drupal installations I have to download all plugins and themes from Drupal.org and then upload them to my site via FTP and when the time comes to upgrade you have to repeat the process. This can be a bit of a hassle if you have multiple sites with multiple module configurations. One particular site runs over 50 different modules and it seems just about every week I have new "critical updates" which I need to apply which increases the time spent managing a website and decreases the avai lable time and resources to web development and marketing.

Drupal websites are powerful but the lack of auto updating features makes it a more maintenance intensive application with additional costs for website management and updates. Add the raw form of a clean install and the amount of time it takes to build out and tweak a Drupal website and you can see how a custom website project on the Drupal platform can get out of control expensive. Starting out slow and adding only necessary features or modules is definitely the way to go if you want to keep down your maintenance costs and focus on promotions and new development.
